    The Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 is a major event related to the slavery issue beginning in 1850 because it was the first event during this time in history that attempted to resolve disputes over slavery in the new territories which were added to the U.S. territory after the Mexican-American War.

  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
The 'Bleeding Kansas' added to the slavery related issues during this time in history because it was a small civil war that was fought in the United States. The two sides of said war were between proslavery and antislavery. The fight was for the control over the new territory of Kansas. This war contributed to the stopping of the slavery issue because the side of antislavery won. Meaning one less slave state.

  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
The Kansas Nebraska Act was a major event in the slavery related issue of the mid 1800s because allowed a few states to decide for themselves whether to be a free or slave state. According to the act, "It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders."

  • Caning of Charles Sumner

    Caning of Charles Sumner
The Caning of Charles Sumner added tension between the two sides because a Democrat man from South Carolina attacked a Republican man from Massachusetts. This therefore creating farther tension and angry between the anti and pro slavery sides. I believe events like this inspired Lincoln's speech that a house (our nation) cannot work if it is divided (the sides of pro and anti slavery).

  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
The Dred Scott Decision added to the slavery issue in the years between 1850 and 1860 because the United States Supreme Court upheld slavery in the U.S. territories. The decision to deny the legality of black citizenship and declaring the Missouri Compromise to be unconstitutional added to the severity of the slavery issues in the states.

  • Lincoln's A House Divided Speech

    Lincoln's A House Divided Speech
Lincoln's speech was a huge turning point in the related slavery issue in the United States territories. His speech's main point was that the U.S. government cannot endure the split between the free states and slave states. This idea can be seen from a quote from his speech, "A house divided against itself cannot stand.” I believe his speech made a large impact because a impactful and powerful leader stated his views on the structure of the nation.
  • Quote from Lincoln's Speech

    Quote from Lincoln's Speech
I believe this portion of Lincoln's speech really shines a light on the importance of having a leader for a nation of people. "'A house divided against itself cannot stand.' I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other."

  • The Presidential Election of 1860

    The Presidential Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was a huge turning point in slavery in the 1850s because Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election. This was a huge turning point because, "The election of 1860 shaped the future of the United States by heralding the end of slavery and marked by a time of unprecedented violence in the nation." Finally 'ending' slavery. With Lincoln's win, who knows whether or not slavery would still be around.
