  • Early Nation Period (1775 -1820)

    -Schools' curricular were based on good morals and religion
    - Pioneers of education, Jefferson and Webster were not for teaching political or moral values
    - public and private institutions were similar and both received funding from the government.

    Common School Movement (1820-1865)

    • the idea of the time was that public school was only for children without money
    • More public schools were built throughout the states ue to the acknowledgement that they would serve as a positive to equally provide education to kids
    • governors felt children's education was up to their parents to enforce and provide at home in Virginia.
