Frederic Henry
We meet the main character called Frederic Henry. He is a young and American soldier, fighting on the Italian side. -

He meets her
Henry was out with Rinaldi, his Italian colleague and friend. Rinaldi convinces Henry to come with him to talk to a nurse called Catherine Barkley. Rinaldi had feelings towards her and wanted Henry to give her a good first impression. However, we quickly realize that Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley hit it off very good and Rinaldi is out of the picture. -

Catherine Barkley
Catherine Barkley quickly reveals that she recently lost her fiancé in the war. Henry and Barkley starts meeting up regularly and talks flirtatiously with each other. They do not think of it as serious, but rather like a game they are playing with each other. -

Henry gets hurt
In battle, Henry gets wounded from the waist down when him and an ambulance driver called Gordini came with macaroni for the hungry soldiers. He wakes up, not feeling his legs. Two drivers called Gavuzzi and Manera gets Henry to a doctor that treats his leg. -

Transferred to Milan
Frederic Henry was transferred to a hospital in Milan because of his foot. He feels like he has no longer a commitment to the war. -

Catherine
One day when Henry is daydreaming, Catherine interrupts him. He starts imagining what his life with her would be. -

Rinaldi
As Henry is in pain in Milan, Rinaldi comes to visit. Rinaldi tries to get Henry to say all the heroic acts he "supposedly" did when the bombs went off. He gives up when he sees how miserable Henry feels when he said that they were only eating. Henry asks Rinaldi to get Catherine to come there. But it would be difficult since Catherine is sick. -

Catherine comes to Milan
After Henry gets shaved by a man who was increasingly impolite because the barber thought that he was an Austrian shaver and nearly got his throat cut. Catherine comes in the door and Henry realizes that he is in love with her. After daydreaming about her for so long and seeing her made him realize his true feelings for her. -

Henry meets Dr. Valentini
After getting an X-ray of his leg, several doctors agree that he should wait at least six months to operate on it, however, Henry would rather have it amputated than to lay in bed for so long. He meets Dr. Valentini and manages to get him to operate. -

Pre-operation
While Henry is waiting to get operated on, he spends most of his time with Catherine. At this time, they really start feeling romantic towards each other and starts thinking about the future. Henry becomes more and more in love with her. -

Post-operation
After the operation, Henry gets sick but recovers. He gets help from a nurse called Helen Ferguson to pass notes to Catherine while she is working. She informs Henry that Catherine is sick and he gets Catherine a few nights off and then they reunite once more. -

Summer
Henry starts learning how to walk again and spends every evening together with Catherine. They act like they are a married couple although Henry confesses he is relieved they are not. -

The races
Catherine and Henry went with Ferguson to the races one day. They bet some money on a different horses , however, they did not win as much as they thought. The grow tired of the crowds and decided that they wanted to watch the rest by themselves. -

The allies struggles
As Henry's leg heals, he is notified that he has a few weeks leave before he has to go back to the front because their side of the war is weakening. Catherine becomes very needy of Henry's company and is becoming complicated as she reveal to Henry that she is pregnant. -

Pregnancy
Catherine shows Henry that she is 100% loyal to him and that she has never been that much in love with someone than she is with him. She declares her love for him when she finds out he has to go back to the front. -

Jaundice
However, before Henry goes back to the front, he is diagnosed with Jaundice. A nurse suspects him of causing it himself when she finds empty liquor bottles in his room.The nurse successfully takes away all his bottles and he still has to go back to the front. -

Goodbyes
Henry and Catherine says their goodbyes and Henry buys a new pistol. Catherine promises to make a home before he comes back. Henry gets a carriage to go back to the front. -

Back in the front
After being back in the front for a bit of time, Henry quickly realize that the Italian forces have no chance against Austria. One morning the Italian line has been broken so, they retreat and Henry joins them in driving away. On the way back, henry has to shoot one engineering sergeant. -

Reunited once again
After a long and complicated retreat, Henry has found Catherine and Ferguson in the town Stresa. The agree that they should go to Switzerland. They agree with a fisherman that they can use his boat toget there. When they reach Locarno, Swiss soldiers take them and give them Visa to stay there. -

The birth
Henry and Catherine eventually move to Montreux and settle in there. However, in March when the baby's due date is closing in, they move to Lausanne to be nearer a hospital and create a life for themselves there for when the baby comes. When it is time for the birth of the baby, Henry learns that it was stillborn and lies to Catherine and says the baby is fine. Catherine dies later, due to a hemorrhage caused by the unsuccessful birth.
