    The Barons, with the support of the Church, pressured King John to spell out a list of their rights and guarantee that those rights would be enforced.     Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who wanted to sail the Atlantic Ocean, hoping to find a route to India to sell and trade spices. He made a total of four trips along the Caribbean and around South America. On his first trip, Columbus sailed for the King and Queen of Spain. He lead three ships including the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria, which was the biggest ship he captained. Columbus was the first European since the Viking Leif Ericsson to set foot on the mainland of America.

    It was October 11, 1492 when hse potted Caribbean islands off southeastern North America. He landed on one of the islands and called it San Salvador. They returned to Spain in 1493.Soon after he returned in 1493, he left on his second expedition, but now with 17 ships and 1500 crewmen. His purpose was to find gold and capture Indians for slaves in the Indies. Columbus established a base in Hispaniola and sailed around it and along the length of southern Cuba.

    IHe named the island Dominica in 1493. It was 1498 when Columbus set sail again, now moving farther south to Trinidad and Venezuela.
