Brown vs. Board of Education Decision
The Brown vs Board of Education was a supreme court case with one side saying seperate is not epual within the public school system, the other saying it was. On May 17th 1954, chief justice Earl Warren read the courts unanimous decision saying seperate is not equal. Little Rock Crisis
9 African American students tried to march into a high school. The governor, Orval Faubus brought in the national guard to try to stop them. Senator John F. Kennedy, Democrat from Massachussets. Against vice president Richard Nixon, Republican from California. Kennedy wins by 112,827 votes or .1%. This was the first election that they televised the presidential debates. -
Botched Airstrike Against Cuba
On April 15th 1961, unmarked US bombers flew from Nicaragua to Cuba to attack the air force base in Cuba. This mission was a massive failure. Bay of Pigs Invasion

Freedom Rides

John Glenn Orbits Earth

24th Amendment

Kennedy Assassination

Jack Weinberg Incedent
Former student of the University of California at Berkeley, Jack Weinberg, set up a table in the banned area to collect donations for CORE, a civil rights group. He was arrested. Free Speech Movement
Sparked by the many incidents including that at Berkely, the Free Speech Movement, was the whole idea of giving freedom of speech on college campuses which had been delcined for years. This was a big deal for all college kids, with protests and marches to get there way. Black Panther Party
In October 1966, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale start the Black Panther Party. The idea of black power appealed to many young African Americans, and compelled them to join the Black Panthers. MAYO Formed
A group of college students from San Antonio found a group called the Mexican American Youth Organization. Summer of Love
The hippie culture came to a peak in the summer of 1967, called the summer of love. The hippie culture consisted of finding yourself in different ways, it was very common to go against anything mainstream. My Lai Massacre
US troops, under orders of William Calley, entered the village of My Lai to look for Vietcong fighters. The US troops killed 450 innocent people. King Assassination
King was leading a march in Memphis to proteset discrimination in the workplace of sanitation workers. King was to arrive on March 28th to march. He would then speak there on April 3rd, the next day he was killed by a white sniper. Peace Talks
In May of 1968, delegates of North Vietnam and the US met in Paris. They started immediately talking about all the issues they were facing. King believed that African Americans were still restricted due to lack of money, and decided to attempt to help with that which sparked this whole idea. Then it expanded to help all proo people rather than just blacks. Because of the assassination, Ralph Abernathy had to lead the effort.
