During his power, he introduced the New Economic Policy, in which the private enterprise was permitted. This policy was in act for many years. He was also known for establishing the idea of Leninism.   • Failed assassination

    Failed assassination
    On August 30, 1918, Fanya Kaplan, a member of the Social Revolutionary party, shot Vladimir Lenin, Soviet leader, twice after he gave a speech in Moscow. Lenin survived, but this led to a lot of conflict between the Bolsheviks and the Social Revolutionaries and a few other political opponents. Thousands of people died, as the civil war in Russia got worse from there on out.

    Joseph Stalin is leader of Russia

    Joseph Stalin was part of the Soviet Communist Party. He changed the way the Soviet Union was interpreted to the rest of the world. In the half-century that he ruled, the USSR changed from an agricultural country to an industrially successful and a global superpower. Even though Stalin's economic and political policies were a success to the creation of the superpower, he enforced harsh rules that made him responsible for the death of millions of Russians.

    The Union of Soviet Social Republic was created after 5 years of 2 revolutions and a civil war that overthrew the imperial regime. It consisted of 15 republics that took up almost one-sixth of the land. At the time after World War II, the USSR and the non-communist West fought the Cold War. After the unrest of these battles, many republics inside the USSR fought for independence. Unable to handle the situation, in December of 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved.

    Nikita Khrushchev is leader of the USSR

    After fighting in World War I, Nikita Khrushchev was known to be a leader that is ill-manner with a very bad temper. He showed little pity to enemies and But, as the leader, he improved the Soviet's standard of living and also spread the space program by launching Sputnik I. Khrushchev also changed Soviet foreign policies by avoiding war with other Western nations and increasing economic competition between Communist countries and non-Communist countries.

    Leonid Brezhnev is leader of USSR

    Even though Leonid Brezhnev was loyal to Khrushchev, he took part of the plot to remove Khrushchev from office. During the time as leader, relations with China started to deteriorate. In 1969, China and the Soviet Union constantly fighted each other along the borders. The main highlight of his time in office was the signing of the Helsinki Act, which recoginzed frontiers in Eastern and Southern Europe and that the Soviets have power over the region.

    In August of 1968, Leonid Brezhnev ordered an invasion of Czechoslovakia to liberalize the Communist system. This eventually led to a lot of public proetests in many countries. Brezhnev believed the Soviet Union had the right to interfere in the internal affairs of "safeguard socialism" which eventually became known as the "Brezhnev Doctorine". Video

    Yuri Andropov played a main role in the Soviet Union invading Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. Even though he know the "international communtiy" would blame the USSR, he isisted on the invasion. This invasion eventually led to the Soviet War in Afghanistan. Yuri Andropov was the longest serving KGB chairman for the USSR and did not resign as head of the KGB until May of 1982.

    Yuri Andropov was a Soviet politician, and General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from November 1982 until his death just sixteen months later.During his rule, Andropov made attempts to improve the economy and cut down on political corruption. He initiated campaigns against alcohol, and struggled to increase work discipline amongst the people of Russia.

    Konstantin Chernenko is leader of the USSR

    Konstantin Chernenko was a Soviet Union Politician. He was born on September 29, 1911 and then passed away on March 10, 1985. Before his death he led the Soviet Union starting from February 13, 1994 for 13 months until he died. He was also the fifth General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Chernenko was also the chairman of the Supreme Soviet Union.

    Mikhail Gorbachev's attempts at political and social reforms led to the end of the Cold War. Gorbachev continued to go for democratization in the Soviet Union. He premitted free elections throughout Russia. He gave citizens freedom of speech. Gorbachev enacted private ownership in services, manufacturing, and foreign trade. Additionally, he withdrew forces from Afghanistan. He also recieved a Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his idea on foreign policies.
