Volstead Act
This act reinforced the prohibitiion of alcohol. This act was named after the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Andrew Volstead. -
Palmer Raids
The Palmer Raids were a part of the Red Scare. This was when attorney General Palmer made raids on anarchists and left-wing radicals, also known as communists. -
Red Scare
Several dozen bombs were mailed to the government and business leaders. The public then became very fearful that the Communists were taking over. This was what was called, the "Red Scare." -
Teapot Dome Affair
The Teapot Dome Affair, also known as the Teapot Dome Scandal, was an example of corruption. This was when the government set aside oil-rich public lands snd secretly set up two private oil companies. -
Sacco & Vanzetti Trial
Sacco and Vanzetti were arrestef and charged for robbery and murder. Although these men clearly showed innocence, the jury found them guilty and sentenced them to death. -
19th Amendment Ratified
The 19th Amendment was that no one could deny a citizen the right to vote based on their gender. In other words, women were finally given the right to vote. -
National Origins Act
The National Origins Act excluded Asian Americans from coming to the U.S. This severely limited those from Europe and was passed in 1924. -
Scopes Trial
The Scopes Trial was also known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. It took place in Tennessee and was about a school that refused to teach the theory of evolution. -
Charles Lindbergh crosses the Alantic
Charles Lindbergh made the first solo airplane flight across the Atlantic. He piloted a plane named The Spirit of St. Louis. -
1st Talking movie, The Jazz Singer is released.
The Jazz Singer was a 1927 American musical film. It only ran for 89 minutes and was about a son with a Jewish father who wanted pursue his dream of becoming a jazz singer. -
Herbert Hoover Elected President
Herbert Hoover was elected president in 1928. He was also blamed for the Great Depression. -
Stock Market Crash
The Stock Market crashed in October of 1929. The Thursday through Tuesday of that week were called "black."
