Trail of TearsEven after the Worcester v. Georgia and the Cherokee Nation v. Georgia were decided in favor of the natives, the removal began in the summer of 1838. Around 17,000 were removed from their home lands, due to the Removal Act. Many were held in prisoned camps while they waited to begin the march of over 1,200 miles to Indian Territory. It is estimated that around 4,000 died during the period. -

Trail of DeathThe governor of Indiana appointed John Tipton to lead the removal of the Potawatomi Indians throughout the state. The chiefs rode in covered wagons as the others follow on horses or foot. A larger percentage of the indians who began the journey died than most other well known forced removals.
