Trail of Death

General Tipton and other volunteer militia surrounded 859 Potawotomi and forced them to move. The tribe followed the leaders on foot or on horseback. Many fell ill due to Typhoid Fever and stress. Although some medicine was provided to the ill, many still died on the march. The amount of deaths lead this march to be called The Trail of Death. Approximately 750 survived -
Trail of Tears
In 1838, the United States government forced over 16,000 Cherokee Indians to move from their homelands (TN, AL, GA, SC), and sent them to "Indian Territory," Oregon. The removal was enforced by the Treaty of New Echota, which was written under the provisions of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Approximately 4,000 Cherokee died in this move.
