Haiti won its Independance from Spain. François Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture led this revolution. He was executed for his efforts. -

War between China and Britian to keep British out of China, and to stop the illegal dealing of Opium to the Chinease people. Started by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Britian won. Ended in the Treaty of Nanking. -

Matt Perry goes to Japan
Matt Perry was part of the United States Navy. The US wanted to open Japan for more trade, to protect shipwrecked sailors, and to use Japan as a coaling base. On July 8th, 1853 Matthew Perry first visited Japan. Japan refused his requests and Perry left, then came back and got Japan to sign Treaty of Kanagawa on March 31st, 1854. Helped lead to overthrowing the Shogun. -
Second Opium War
More disputes of the treatment of British officers in Chinease ports lead to this war. Britian won, CHina forced to sign and Unequal Treaty, lead to the Taiping and the Boxer Rebellion. Helped lead to the end of a dynastic China. -

Sepoy Mutiny
Sepoys (Indians) under British rule were not happy. Then they heard rumors about their rifles being spread with lard and beef fat and that was against their religion since cow is sacred to the Hindus. Started mutiny which was crushed by the British. -
Unification of Germany
German Confederation was a small collection of states rulled by Austria. Otto von Bismarck appointed chancellor of Prussia by King Wilhelm IV. Challenged Austria's power. The process of unifiying German law started. The Austrian-Prussian War and the the Franco-Prussian War both led to the Unification of Germany. William of Prussia became Emperor of Germany on January 18th 1871. -

War between Japan and Russia, Japan wins, gets ports in China and Taiwan, amazing victory. -

Zulu Uprising
British introduced a new poll tax in 1906. In South Africa two British officers were killed by Zulus, so the British declared a war against the Zulus. Zulus fought back against unfair British treatment, lost. -
Dr. Sun Yat-sen takes over China
Dr, Sun Yat-sen wanted a republic based on the three principles of the people. He lead rebellions against the Qing dynasty, and the party he founded wins the national election. He leads the new republic but is soon expelled from Parliment.
