The Caraval
The Caraval was a ship made mainly for exploring. It was sturdier than earlier vessels . It also had triangular sails that allowed it to sail effectively against the wind. Without the invention of the Caraval , exploring the world would have been a lot more difficult & stressful for the europeans. Portugal Leads The Way
Portugal were the leaders in overseas exploration, mainly because of thier government support. Prince Henry of Portugal founded a navigational school where sailors, shipbuilders & etc.. could perfect thier trade. Bartholemu Dias Bartholemu Dias and his crew were the first sailors from Portugal to reach the southern tip of Africa. But because his crew were running ou of food , and were getting sick , he decided to retun home. 10 years later, he helped Vasco De Gama,plan a voyage around Africa To India . -

Christopher Columbus
On 1492, an Italian sea captain, Christopher Columbus convinced Spain to finance his plan to find a route to Asia by sailing West across the Atlantic Ocean. He reached the Carribean ,He discovered the West Indies & reached an island & called the native people Indians(Native Americans) . Even though he didn't think so , his voyage would forever change the world. He's one of the main reason's why we have America today, & why we celebrate Thanksgiving. Vasco De Gama
Vasco De Gama began exploring the East African Coast with & found many spices , rare silk, & gems. His cargo was worth 60 times the cost of the voyage. De Gama's voyage of 27,000 miles had given Portugal a direct sea route to India. Found on page 532 - World History Book * -

Wikipedia Article. De Soto was a spanish explorer & conquistador. He lead the first European expedition into the New World(America). He was also the first European documented to have crossed the Mississippi River. He wanted to come to the New World to find gold & treasures & a route to get to China. -

He wanted the king of Portugal to finance his journmey around the world,but because the king refused, he went & offered his services to Spain.
When he was in Asia,he picked up a boy & named him Enrique. When him and his crew arrived in the Phillipines, he noticed that Enrique understood the language. He then realized that Enrique was the first to person to travel around the world! He discovered that the pacific ocean was freezing & huge. also that Asia was very far away from South America. -

Francisco Vasuez de Coronado
Wikipedia Article. He was a spanish conquistidaor who set out to conquer the "Seven Cities Of Gold" but never did because it's a myth. He visited New Mexico & many parts of Southwest America. He also governed the city of Nueva Galacia. -
The Dutch
The Dutch began to challenge Portugal dominance over the Asian Region(The Indian Ocean Trade). After they declared thier independance again Spain, they became a leading power. They also owned the largeat fleet of ships in the world, at that time (20,000 vessels). With the creation of the Dutch East Indian company, which was so they could establish & direct trade, they drove out the English and established rule over the Asian region. No Cultural Blending For Asia
