Prenatal Development of Baby Throughout Pregnancy

  • Month 1

    Month 1
    By the end of the first month, the baby is around 6-7mm (1/4 inch). The heart, digestive system, backbone and spinal cord start forming. The placenta starts developing as well. By now, the single fertilized egg is 10,000 times bigger than it was at conception.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    Baby's facial features are continuing to develop. Ears begin as little folds of skin on the side of the head. Arms and legs star forming and start as tiny buds on the baby's body. By now, the neural tube is well formed. The digestive tract and sensory organs start developing and bone starts replacing cartilage. By the end of month 2, the baby is about 1 inch long and weighs about 1/30 of an ounce. A heart beat can normally be detected by now and the baby is a fetus instead of an embryo.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    The baby's organs are all present and they will continue to mature as the baby grows in order to become functional. The baby's feet, toes, arms, hands, and fingers are fully formed and fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop. The baby's reproductive system is developing but the sex of the baby is still hard to determine through an ultrasound. The circulatory and urinary systems are functional and liver produces bile. The baby is about 4 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    The baby's fingers and toes are well-defined and the baby's heartbeat may now be audible through a Doppler. The nervous system is starting to function and reproductive organs are fully formed. By now, your doctor will be able to tell what the sex of the baby is. By the end of the fourth month, your baby is about 6 inches long and weighs about 4 ounces.
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    By the end of the fifth month of pregnancy, the baby is about 10 inches long and weighs from 1/2 to 1 pound.The nervous system is beginning to function at this point. Hair begins to grow on the babies head, and lanugo, a soft fine hair, covers the baby's shoulders, back, and temples. This hair protects the baby and is usually shed at the end of the baby's first week of life.

    The end of the sixth month, your baby is about 12 inches long and weighs about 2 pounds. His or her skin is reddish in color, wrinkled, and veins are visible through the baby's translucent skin. Baby's finger and toe prints are visible. The eyelids begin to part and the eyes open Your baby may respond to sounds by moving or increasing the pulse, and you may notice jerking motions if baby hiccups.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    By week 40, your baby is around 7 and 1/4 pounds. ... At the end of the seventh month of pregnancy, fat begins to be deposited on your baby. Your baby is about 36 cm (14 inches) long and weighs from about 900 - 1800g (two to four pounds). Your baby's hearing is fully developed and he or she changes position frequently and responds to stimuli, including sound, pain, and light.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    The baby can see and hear by now and the baby's brain is growing rapidly. Most of the baby's internal systems are fully developed. The baby is still maturing and developing reserves of body fat. The baby may start to kick more often. After month 8, the baby is about 18 inches long and may weigh as much as 5 pounds.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    your baby continues to grow and mature. His or her lungs are nearly fully developed. Your baby's reflexes are coordinated so he or she can blink, close the eyes, turn the head, grasp firmly, and respond to sounds, light, and touch. Your baby's position changes to prepare itself for labor and delivery. The baby drops down in your pelvis, and usually his or her head is facing down toward the birth canal.
