Birth of The Republicans
On May 9th 1854 the Republican party was formed. The parties main beliefs was not supporting slavery being introduced into the west. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Was an act passed by Congress that over turned the missouri compromise that introduced the northern territory to slavery. Both pro and Anti slavery people moved into the territory to influence what the future status of it would be. -
Bleeding Kansas
A series of violent events caused by the choosing of the future status of the kansas and nebraska territories between pro and anti-slavery forces. Only a puddle of blood compared to the onslaught of the civil war to come. -
Pottawatomie Massacre
John brown and a group of abolitionist settlers killed 7 people in response to the attack on lawrence. -
Sumners beating
Mass. senator Charles sumner said a speach attacking the slave supporters in the senate. 2 days later South Carolina Rep. Preston Brooks attacks senator sumner on the floor of ther senate with a cane. -
lecompton constitution
This act was to enable Kansas to be a slave state. Although there was enough opposition to send it back to congress where it was rejected and kansas became a free state. -
John Browns rebellion
John Brown and 17 other men including 5 black males. Attacked and raided Harpers Ferry for the weapons so that they could have a slave rebellion. They were eventuall all killed. -
Star of the West
Bringing supplies to reinforce ft. sumter, the merchant ship Star of the west was fired upon thus enraging lincoln leading to the start of the war. Also Mississippi left the union on this day. -
President Lincoln
Was elected by popular vote from the people. Him becoming president also resulted in 7 states leaving the union and conveting into slave states.
