Proclamation of 1763 The proclamation of 1763 effectively closed off the idea of westward expansion for the colonist. England said it was necessary to calm the fears of the native americans but the colonist felt it was a way to conrol them by keeping them along the coast. -

The Stamp Act was passed by British Parliament to help pay the cost of the Seven Years War/French and Indian War. The colonist argued that it was an example of taxation without representation and opposed the act. -

Townshend Act The British passed these acts to tax the colonist. They revenue was used to pay the colonial governors. -
Boston Massacre
Boston Massacre
Colonist and British troops clashed over the Townshend Acts. In the violence that followed 5 colonist were killed. The Boston Massacre is viewed as a major event showing the growing tension between the colonist and the British. -
Boston Tea Party
Boston Tea Party The British passed and act that said all tea in the colonies must be purchased from the British East India company. To protest, the colonist snuck aboud the ships at night, dresed as Indians, and threw the tea overboard. -
Intolerable Acts
Intolerable Acts The Intolerable Acts were passed by the British in response to the Boston tea party. They were a series of acts placing limitation on the trade and government of the colonies. They resulted in the first meeting of the Continental Congress. -
