As a result to Germany invading Poland the Polish migrate to the United States, as it is one of the few countries not involved in the war. The Polish also gather in Pittsburgh as it is one of the most industrially developed areas. -
France surrenders to Germany-Pittsburgh prepares for war
After France surrenders to Germany the whole nation begins preparing for war. But Pittsburgh was especially affected because it had to redesign all of it's factories to create war weapons and other artillery. -

From January 1st, 1941 to December 1st 1945, over 17 million military personale were transported over the PRR. To handle militarty personale, 29,670 extra trains were needed. -

In the summer of 1942, Pittsburgh armymen who were on home leave had to learn how to swim in order to comply with Truman's plans for attack. They also learned other skills in order to acheive readiness. One of these men were Michael T. Vernillo of Pittsburgh. -
Battle of Stalingrad-renaming of state guard
As a result of war efforts gaining detail Pennsylvania had to rethink it's defense system in case of attack. The government made some adjustments to it and renamed it The Pennsylvania State Guard. -

After D-Day many more Pittsburgh citizens enlist in the war. This is because of the shortage of men there were at this specific time. -
Allies liberate Paris- USS "Pennsylvania"
September 12th-14th, Pennsylvania bombarded targets on the island of Peleliu. On 15 September, she furnished gunfire support for the landings on that same island. -
Battle of Iwo Jima-navy ship "pennsylvania"
Departing on 22 February, she steamed via the Marshall Islands and Pearl Harbor to San Francisco arriving on 13 March. She entered the Hunter's Point Shipyard and underwent a thorough overhaul. -
FDR Dies-shocked P.A
News of Roosevelt's death had many Pennsylvania citizens shocked. As a result most of this area was in mourning with the rest of the country, but especially Pennsylvania because it had heavy involvement in government affairs at this time. -
Truman becomes president-enlisting in war
After Truman became president many citizens of Pittsburgh and the rest of Pennsylvania enlist in the war. Truman also encourged many residents with his speeches to join in the war efforts. Many factories began producing materials in the war. -

Georgia sues Pennsylvania Railroad over a dispute about the cost of freight for the war. Also included, was an arguement about passengers. -

VJ Day-soldiers come home
VJ day served as a great relief to many citizens, because the events that followed VJ Day in Pittsburgh were celebrations for their soldiers that were coming home. After this date all of the living soldiers got to celebrate in their hometown and factories turned back to normal production.
