    The Southern states of American broke away from the Union to make their own nation as the Confederate States of America. This was due to the long argued case of slavery. The North did not like the idea of slavery and the south lived off of it.

    New Flag Appears
    The flag of the Southern States was spotted waving over Montgomery, Alabama on the same day as Abraham Lincoln's inauguration.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    A Northern Fort in the Southern area was taken over by the Confederate Army. It was the first battle of the American Civil War. They took it over because they figured it was closest to attack. It was smart that Abraham Lincoln let them attack the Fort because he could tell his people that it was the South who started the war and not them. Luckily there were no deaths although one of the soldiers died from an accident.
  • Port Blocked !

    Abraham Lincoln used the North's Naval army to block ALL of the southern ports. They did this to starve them because their Ports were their only way to trade. This would slow down their economy in producing weaponry.

    Robert E. Lee gives up his rank and position in the United States Army. "I cannot raise my hand against my birthplace, my home, my children." Lee then goes back to the south where he came from and resumed his position there as General

    Lincoln gives a speech in congress. He says: "a People's contest...a struggle for maintaining in the world, that form, and substance of government, whose leading object is, to elevate the condition of men...", The Congress then allows the call for another 50 000 men to become soliders of the Union Army
  • The First BullRun

    The First BullRun
    The Union Army under Gen. Irvin McDowell suffers a defeat at Bull Run 25 miles southwest of Washington. The Confederate Army had really good defensive strategies. Union troops fall back to Washington.
  • Replacements!

    President A. Lincoln substituded George B. McClellan, Commander of the Department of the Potomac, replacing McDowell.
  • Upgrade!

    A. Lincoln appointed George B. McClellan General-In-Chief because the ex General-In-Chief, Winfield Scott retired.
  • Trent

    2 Confederate agents were on the Trent(boat), to Europe in hopes of gaining diplomatic recognition from Brittain and France. Union soliders seized them and took them to Boston. The Brits didn't like it, they threatned for war but both Washington and London didn't want war, so they had a diplomatic soloution with the help of King Albert. The Union apologized and released the 2 men.
  • Victory for Grant !

    Another stunning victory for Grant in Tennese. Capturing Fort Henry exactly 10 days after Fort Donelson. After this battle, he earned the nickname 'Unconditional Surrender' Grant
  • RIP

    Abraham Lincoln's 11 year old son died from a servere fever. It was believed that he got this from the poluted water that came from the White House
  • Shiloh

    The suprise attack by the Confederate soldiers on Grant was brutal. Grant's troops were settled on the Tennese River banks. 13000 Union soldiers dead and 10000 Confederate soldiers wounded. This is tragic because the number exceeded all the deaths of the other battles in the Civil War so far.
  • Naval Showdown

    Naval Showdown
    The Ironclad was a new batteship that the USA made that isn't like the regular wooden boat. It is made entirely from Iron. The Confederate boat sunk 2 Union battleships. The Union quickly followed up with an Ironclad of their own. It resulted in a draw at the end of the battle. This changed the trend of naval battles by making wooden ships obsolete.
  • Bravery at it's best!

    17 Union battleships sailed up the Mississipi River under the command of David Farragut to capture New Orleans, the south's biggest sea port. As they were sailing, they sailed into a mine field. David Farragut then said "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead".
  • Seven Days Battle

    The seven days battle was a series of battles that took place in 7 days. The 2 major generals in the fights were Robert E. Lee of the Confederate side and George B. McClennan of the Union side. This took place near Richmond, Virginia. The Union was invading the South like most the other battles that have happened so far. The Confederacy drove them out of Richmond, Virginia in days. At the end, Robert. E. Lee was victorious even though the number of casualties the Confederate army had was larger.
  • Second Bullrun

    During the second battle of bull run, 75,000 Union soldiers lead by John Pope are defeated by 55,000 Confederates lead by Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet at the second battle of Bull Run in Virginia. Again, the Union Army retreats to Washington.
  • Antietam, Maryland

    One of the bloodiest days in History for US Military. Union Army led by George B. M. stopped the Confederate troops at Antietam, Maryland. The Union outnumbered the Conf. by a very noticable amount. By nightfall, 26000 killed, wounded and capture. At the end of the battle, the Union army were the victors.
  • New Commander!

    President Lincoln replaced George with Ambrose E. Burnside as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln has grown impatient after Antietam. He even told him this: "If you do not wish to use the army, I would like to borrow it"
  • Fredericksburg

    Army of the Potomac under Gen. Burnside suffers a costly defeat at Fredericksburg in Virginia with a loss of 12,653 men after 14 assaults on well protected Rebels on Marye's Heights. Confederate losses are 5,309.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Lincoln issues the final Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in territories held by Confederates and encourages the enlisting of black soldiers in the Union Army. The war to keep the Union now becomes a struggle for the abolition of slavery.

    President Lincoln decides to again, replace the commander-in-chief from Burnside to Joseph Hooker
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    Hooker's forces lost to Robert E. Lee's forces in this battle. Lee had less men in his army but due to his daring and smart batle tactics, they still won the battle. Union losses are 17,000 killed, wounded and missing out of 130,000. The Confederate amry's casualty statisitcs were 13, 000 out of 60,000.
  • Gettysburg

    The battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important fights in the history of the United States of America. This fight was a tide turner for the Union army. The Confed. wanted to capture Gettysburg because it was the main transportation hub in the north and it was very close to the white house. It was very different from the other battles because this one was a battle fought on northern soil. It was an advantage to the north because they would be getting their equipment faster than the south.

    Abraham Lincoln met with abolisionist Frederick Douglas to push full equity for Union "Negro" troops.
  • Gettysburg Address

    President Abraham Lincoln gave one of the most recognized speeches at the National cemetary after the battle of Gettyburg. This speech was important because the president did not point out the differences between the confed. and union. He used the word 'us' a lot. It also mentioned that for the soldiers who died during the civil war, died for a very important reason. It was to save the country from falling apart.

    Due to Grant's amazing commanding skills, the president appointed him to command ALL armies in the united states of amerca and leaving William T. Sherman to lead his army of the west from previous battles.
  • Bad Aim !

    Union forces miss an opportunity to capture Petersburg and to cut off the Confederate rail lines. In effect, a nine month siege of Petersburg begins with Grant's forces surrounding Lee.
  • First confrontation

    Sherman's forces battles the Rebels at Atlanta under the command of John. B. Hood
  • New confederate presidency

    Democrats voted George B. McClellan as President to run against Abraham Licoln at re-election.
  • Sherman at it's greatest!

    Atlanta is now capture from Sherman's forces. He telegraphs a message back to the president saying: "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won." This greatly helped Lincoln at the re-elections.
  • Abraham Lincoln, Victorious again!

    Abraham Lincoln is re-elected president, defeating Democrat George B. McClellan. Lincoln carries all but three states that belonged to the Confederacy.
  • NO MORE SLAVERY !

    The U.S. Congress approves the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, to abolish slavery. The amendment is then submitted to the states for ratification.
  • Defeat!

    Grant's forces begin an advance to break through Lee's lines at Petersburg. General Ambrose P. Hill of the Confederate Army was killed in Action. Lee evacuates Petersburg with what's left of his army. The Confederate Capital, Richmond, is evacuated.
  • Lee's Surrender

    The great Robert E. Lee surrenders his confederate army to Ulysess S. Grant on the 9th of Aprol 1865. Because he was such an honourable and respected man, even in the North, the union allowed him to keep his horse and sword. Usually if one surrenders, his horse and sword will be taken away from him.

    After the victory of the Union Army, President Lincoln and his wife went to see "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre that night. During the 3rd act, a man by the name of John Wilkes Booth walks up behind Lincoln and shoots him in the back of his head. Devistated, his wife screamed. A doctor from across the street came and tried to help. Unfortunately, Lincoln never gains conciousness.
