The Chinese people wanted to reform the government and the socitey. Modern technology and weapons were introduced at this time. Peasants rebelled against the Qing dynasty. -

China was divided into spheres of Influence from the west. The Sphere of Influence is an area where the country has special privliages. Factories and railroads were built and these gave China political influence. -
Boxer Rebellion
Boxers who were anti-foreign Chinese people killed other foreigners and Chinese christians. The Boxers surrendered in Beijing. The result was that China had to let foreign troops into their land and waters. -

This was retaliation for the mukden incident. The Japenese then took control of every city along the southern rail way. This lastest till the end of WWII. -
Long March: Chiang Kai Shek
Chinese communists traveled more than 6000 miles from south east China to the Northwest of China. Minimal communists survived the march. The march was a symbol of the hardships the communists had until they gained power in 1949. -
World War II: Japan vs. China
Japanese declared war on China. They bombed many of China's cities. Nationalists and Communists in China joined together to counter attack on the Japanese. -

Mao issued a plan to modernize argiculture and industry in order to compete with the U.S. People were divided into communes and these communes worked together as one. -

Power struggle within the communist party. Political,economic and social violence errupted in China within the party. -

Deng Xiaopings goals for modernization were agriculture, Industry, technology and defense. -
Return of Hong-Kong to China
After 150 years Hong Kong now belonged to China again after british rule.
