    The "Cold War" was a brief time of tension between the U.S. and the Soviet union. Without actual war it lasted from about 1945 to 1991. Joseph Stalin the leader of the Soviet Union was trying to gain total power and take over all of europe and encouraged communism. The U.S. was against this and that was part of the reason for the tension.

    She served as an Associate Justice from her appointed in 1981 by Ronald Reagan until retirement in 2006. Samuel Alito took her spot in October of 2005. She was elected official and judge in Arizona.

    On June 12, 1981, Major-league baseball players went on strike. Because of the strike, 713 baseball games were cancelled. Team owners lost $166 millon in revenue and baseball players lost $30 million in wages. The Strike lasted until the end of July.

    Sally Ride was physicist and astronaut. She had served on the investigation panels for two space shuttle disasters (Challenger and Columbia) - only person to serve on both. She remains the youngest American astronaut to be launched into space. She went into space in 1983.

    DNA Profiling, Is a technique employed by forensic scientists to assist in identification of individuals by their DNA profiles. DNA profiles are encrypted sets of numbers that reflect the persons DNA makeup. It is used in parental testing and criminal investigation.

    In 1984, the PG-13 movie rating was created. Patrick Swayze starred in the first PG-13 movie entitled Red Dawn. Red Dawn was a movie about a group of teenagers that were trying to save their Colorado town. The PG-13 movie rating was for movies that had a “higher level of intensity” than movies rated with the PG rating.
