Manufacturing and Consumer Boom in Household Appliances

After World War II there was a manufacturingand consumer boom that made household products more affordable and attractive. As better roads and more cars allowed the spread of new suburbs in the 1950s, women were encouraged to stay at home and take charge of a range of appliances that were supposed to help them in her role as full-time home-makers. This was the beginning of the Household appliances boom.

First Microwave Oven

The first microwave oven was built in 1947 and is regarded as one of the most important household appliance. it could cook a chicken in an amazing two minutes, it was 1.6 metres tall and weighed 340 kilograms! It alsocost the equivalent of around $120 000. It didn't end up selling too well.

The Japanese electronics company Tappan madethe first microwave oven that could really be used at home in 1952.

Appliances becoming easier to use.

Jan 1, 1960

By 1960 appliances had become automatic, smaller and easier to use. One example of this was in 1960 when washing machines became fully automatic.

Microwaves Become Popular

Microwave Ovens became a regular part of the kitchen during the 1980s as they became safer to use and were more reliable.
