Speaking out against Britain
James Otis was among the first to speak up against Britain's unjust taxing. He wrote the book "The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved" explaining why what they were doing was wrong. -
Fighting Back
Boston merchants boycott British luxuries. This was important because it was a big step in beginning to fight back and becoming our own country. -
Sons of Liberty
The Sons of Liberty were an underground group opposed to the taxing on the colonies. They formed in many different spots among the colonies in July of 1765. They were important because they were a major group that helped with independence. -
Quartering Act
British soldiers and New York colonists get violent over the quartering act. This was significant because its one of the first retaliation acts done by the colonists. -
Samuel Adams
Samuel Adams fights against taxation without representation. He sends a circular letter to join colonists together to help his cause. This started the banding together of colonists to fight back. -
Protesting
More people join the boycott of British goods. This time the protests break out in philadelphia. This shows that the colonists are serious and they refuse to be taken advantage of. -
Boston Massacre
Gun shots were fired by British guards at a protest in Boston causing mayhem. This was significant because it caused a lot of chaos between the colonists and Britain. It also turned a lot of the colonists against the British that felt no need to revolt before hand. -
Town meetings
A meeting was held by Sam Adams asserting the rights of the colonists and proposing self rule, separate from Britain. These town meetings were how the colonists got on the same page with one another before acting on anything. -
Boston Tea Party
On this night colonial activists dumped tea out of British ships to show that the taxes they were being forced to pay were unacceptable. This was important because it put tension between the colonists and Britain which helped slowly pull us away from them. -
Independence
The American Declaration of Independence was signed on the fourth of July 1776. This was the day the colonists broke free from Britain.
