Columbus reached the Caribbean and the island of San Salvador on this day. This is important because his "discovery" brought North America to the attention of Europe. -
Emmville- oops I mean, Jamestown Colony is created
This colony was made for the search for gold. Since they spent all their time looking for it, they spent no time farming. The harsh winter killed almost all of them, since they had no food. -
New Amsterdam becomes New York
Peter Minuit set up in the town that would later be called New Amsterdam. The Dutch West India Company wanted to expand, so they had him go. When Charles II became king, he granted the land to his brother, the Duke of York. His army invaded New Amsterdam and it became New York. -
Plymouth Colony created
These colonists came to America on the Mayflower. They started their colony on land that had been occupied, but the population was wiped out by a sickness. They believed God had chosen this land for their people. -
Massachusetts Bay Colony created
In the 1630's, the Puritans, or Pilgrims to us, came from England in the Great Migration and created the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1691, the Plymouth Colony was also taken over. -
William Penn creates Pennsylvania
William Penn's religious group, the Quakers, needed religious freedom from England. They came to America and wouldn't agree to anything the English were saying. Most of the Quaker men spent time in English jail. -
Albany congress meets
The Albany Congress met together in the Spring of 1754 because they felt a war with France was likely. They needed to talk about what to do or what to say to the French. -
George Washington assaults Fort Duquesne
George Washington attacked this fort, but when the French lost the French and Indian War, he was forced to surrender. -
The French and Indian War concludes!
This war was fought between the French and British. The Indians sided with the French, which is why is is called the French and Indian War. It lasted for 7 years, which is why it is also known as the Seven Years War. It officially ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
