Nixon-Kennedy Debates (1st on Television)
The Nixon-Kennedy debate took place on September 26th, 1960 this was the first time the presidential debate was broadcast on national television. Those who listened to the debate on the radio believed Nixon won, while those watching believed Kennedy won because Nixon was sweaty and nervous while Kennedy was calm cool, and collected. -
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The Gulf of Tonkin resolution was put into place to give LBJ all the power to do whatever he wanted in the South and North Vietnam War. This resolution was put into place after two us ships had supposedly been attacked in international waters. -
The Assassination of John F. Kennedy
As part of preparation for Kennedy's presidential campaign, he had to go through multiple different states. He was in Dallas with his wife Jackie while in the motorcade on the way to the presidential luncheon where gunshots started from the plaza on main street at 12:30. One shot hit JFK in the neck and seconds later his skull was hit and flys off, Jackie then jumped on the back of the vehicle to catch his skull. Soon after he was announced dead at the hospital. Killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. -
The Beatles Appear for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show
After several weeks of the Beatles songs hitting number one on the charts in the us. On February 9th, 1964 the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for their first televised appearance in America around 73 million people tuned in solidifying their popularity. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Operation Rolling Thunder was a bombing campaign performed by US forces against North Vietnam during the war. This bombing rampage took place from March of 65 to October of 68. -
Woodstock
Woodstock was a music festival in Bethel, New York that was free and commonly attended by poor people. This festival has a message of peace that is spread. It also had multiple very famous performers such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, ect. -
March on the Pentagon
The march/protest at the Pentagon occurred on the pentagon on October 21st, 1967. They were protesting the Vietnam War. And the death of all the young poor men drafted this march had about 100,000 participants. -
Mai Lai Massacre
Lt William Calley and his riled-up troops from experiencing tragedies in Vietnam were sent on a search and destroy mission by Calley. This mission resulted in the death of 500 unarmed villagers many of whom were children. -
Riots at the Chicago Democratic Convention
The riots took place outside the democratic convention right before the 1969 election. This was the first televised riot where hundreds were also arrested. This riot later led to the Chicago 8 trial. -
Chicago 8 Trial 09/24/1969
The heavily publicized trial of the Chicago 8 took place in 1969. They were put on trial for supposedly organizing protests outside the democratic national convention in Chicago. At a time with lots of political injustices, this trial brought questions about freedom of speech and the right to protest. They were indicted for Rap Brown law, and there was lots of protesting and chanting at their trial they all got sentences, and then in 1970, all their charges got dropped. -
Kent State Protest
On May 4th, 1970 the anti-Vietnam protests killed 4 on Kent State College campus. After the National Guard was called in for the Kent State peaceful anti-Vietnam protests -
Newport Jazz Festival 07/03/1971
The Newport Jazz Festival took place in Newport Rhode Island it was a very popular festival that had greatly popularized jazz in the 60’s. In 1971 the last two days of the festival were canceled due to rioting. -
Roe vs. Wade
Roe Vs. Wade was added as part of the 14th Amendment after much protesting in 1973, to protect a woman's right to have an abortion constitutionally. -
The Beatles Break Up
The highly popular 60’s and early 70’s band broke up in 1974. The reason for their split was related to Brian Epstein their manager's death, and have problems handling those responsibilities without him.
