6.4: A Limited Monarchy

  • "Divine Right of Kings" is Published

    King James VI of Scotland (I of England) writes his argument as to why Kings/monarchs have the right to rule absolutely and without support from a second political body such as Parliament.
  • King James I Crowned King of England

    King James VI of Scotland takes over the English throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth I. He strongly believed in an absolute monarchy, thus beginning a long-lasting conflict with English Parliament.
  • Parliament is Dissolved

    King James I, still believing that he should be an absolute monarch, dissolves the English Parliament.
  • King Charles I takes over the Throne

    Like his father James I, Charles was not a fan of Parliament. Throughout his reign he dissolved England's Parliamentary body numerous times.
  • English Civil War Begins

    This war was a battle between Royalist- who believed in the power of an absolute monarchy and were backed by King Charles I- and Parliamentarians- who were in support of having a limited Monarchy.
  • English Civil War Ends

    The War ends, and the Parliamentarian forces win. Oliver Cromwell took over England following the death of King Charles I.
  • William & Mary Take over as Rulers

    William & Mary of Scotland take over as rulers of England. They were the first joint rulers and believed in a limited monarchy.
