Cuba had a corrupt leader and government, and so the people were looking for a new leader to create prosperity instead of suffering. Fidel Castro happened to be that leader with communism as his ally. Throughout the 50's he gained power. -

North Korean was communist and allies with Soviet Union and China. South Korea was a capitalist economy and were allies with USA. Kim II Sung wanted to unite Korea so he attacked the south and both sides began pushing back and fourth until it ended back where they had started. -

The Soviet Union created this treaty for most of eastern Europe to basically keep them in line. -

Berlin wall divides Berlin into east and west Berlin which are apart of east and west Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
In the Summer of 1962, the US learned that the Soviet Union was shipping nuclear missiles to Cuba. The US demanded that the Soviets remove these missiles from Cuba or else there would be nuclear war. The Soviets ignored their requests so the US set up a blockade until the Soviets withdrew the missiles. -

American soldiers in VietnamIn Vietnam fighting was going on between the north and the south, because of the different political views. The Americans with enter the war on August 7, 1964. They will send 500,000 troops to Vietnam to support the southern vietnemese. In 1973 the Paris Peace Accord would be signed for a cease fire. The americans brought their troops home and 2 years later the north will have conquered the south. -

Eastern European IndependenceIn 1968 eastern European countries started to call for freedom from the Soviet Union. In 1968 Czechoslovakia was invaded because of uprisings. So Hungary and other countries began to slowly and quietly change their government. By 1989 a powerful democracy movement was sweeping throughout the region. In 1991 the Warsaw Pact was broken and the eastern European countries were free. -

The Detente was a relaxation of tensions, during the 1970s. The American strategy under detente was to restrain the Soviet Union through agreements. -

Soviet in Aghanistan
Soviet troops in AfghanistanThe Afghanistan government was set up by the Soviets. The mujahedin, or muslim religious warriors, in the mountains of Afghanistan. These people were found to be as difficult as fighting the guerrilas in Vietnam by the Americans. Although they didn't win it alone they were supported with weapons by the US. The Soviets lost many men and money, and gained nothing from this. -

End of Cold WarIn the 1980's the eastern European countries under Soviet control started demanding independence. The Soviets tried to keep them in order but with the economic problems they couldn't do anything. They did not have enough money to keep up with the US and fell too far behind. Things like the the glasnost, and the perestroika were put in place but were not affective. So the Cold War was over by 1991.
