    The United States, Canada and 10 countries formed the NATO which stands for the North Alantic Treaty Organization. The NATO was a group of alliances that if one got attacked they would helped eachother out.

    Korea was split into two parts at the end of World War 2, North and South. The North was communist and the South was a capitalist market. Kim Sung, the dictator of the North called for a heroic struggle to help reunite Korea. North Korean troops invaded the South. The United Nations Security Council condemned the invasion, which then the United Nations stepped in and helped South Korea.

    Eventually both sides signed a armistice which ended fighting and formed a Demilitarized Zone which was a no fighting zone. Just like in Germany, the South had a economic boom and rising standards of living while the North went through a decline. The North was controled by many dicatators while the South was controlled by one dictator. The korean conflict ended in 1953

    Eastern Europe and Independence

    In Eastern Europe, countries are being influenced by communist governments. Hungary slowly changes and works towards freedom in a peaceful manor. Poland on the other hand didn't go so peaceful and put up and little fight. In Czechoslovakia, Vaclav Havel, a dissident writer was elected president, and they split without violence. Lastly, Berlin wall was knocked down and people were free to go on either side or Berlin.

    East Germany built a wall that sealed off west Berlin to stop East Germans from fleeing into West Berlin. The wall was used to show the major dislike for communism.

    Fidel Castro led the Cuban Revolution and changed into a communist country to help gain support of the Soviet Union. Then when 1962 came, the Soviets added nuclear missels to cause fear of war.

The Viet Cong, the communist rebels, tried to overthrow the south government. The americans were afraid of a theory called the domino theory. This theory was that if one country went communist, all countries would fall into communism. After all the fighting, the Paris Peace Accord set in on January which was to stop all fighting.

    Detente was a period of time where the Americans and the Soviet Union decided the would have a period of relaxtion of tensions. The americans had a strategy to restrain the Soviet Union through diplomatic agreements. This era ended in 1979 when the Soviet Union invaded Afganistan.

    Soviets in Afghanistan
    Soviets invade because Afghanistan was communist but then they started to turn non-communist. Soviets did not like this so they went to invade. US didn't want to be sending troops but they sent advisors and aid. Muladhedin fighters, which is people from all over the world came to help fight. When the Soviets finally leave, the US does not help rebuild Afghanistan. The Soviet Union is left with heavy casualities, high costs and very few successes. The Soviets left in 1789
  • The Cold War comes to an end

    The Cold War comes to an end
    A new leader comes to power by the name of Mikhail Gorbachev. He calls for two things called Glasnost and Perestroika. Glasnost was a plan where people could talk about the problems with their country openly. Perestroika was a plan to reconstruct the government and econmy by reducing the government. After 69 years of the Soviet Union exsisting, it's now gone.
