With help of ohioans, Andrew Jackson became president. Most of the people in goverment were rich, well educated men from the east. Andrew jackson said more ordinary people should be in goverment. Many ohioans agreed with him. They called Jackson " The people's president'. Jackson was elected second term. -
slavery as a national issue
In the 1830's arguments about slavery were dividing the nation. People called abolitionists wanted to end slavery. other people wanted to limit the spread of slavery. others wanted states to decide for themselvs. People in the south did NOT want to end slavery they said that the work on plantations could not be done without slaves. -
William Henry Harrison
The new president was william henry harrison of Ohio. Harrison was a hero in the battle of tippecanoe. We don't know what kind of president harrison would be because he died of pneumonia after 1 month in the office. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Hariet Beecher Stowe was a writer. In 1852 she published a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. I was a fictional story about slavery. The book was a best-seller. It drew more attention than to issue of slavery. -
underground railroad
Alot of Ohioans helped people escape the underground railroad. The underground railroad was not a railroad or underground.It was a secret route to help slaves escape to freedom. The members of the underground railroad called conductors, hid runaways. -
Civil War 1861-1865
Civil means a War between the same contry. About 100 people died. Prison camps are where soldeirs who were captured go. To help soldeirs the Ohio Iron Works sent weapons. Farmers sent food to soldeirs. Ohio Wool Industry produced uniforms, blankets and tents for soldeirs.
