    (Political/Social) The Gulf War was a conflict between Iraq and many other nations including France. The war started when Iraq invaded Kuwait. During this war France fought with 18,000 troops and France had many operations which are also known as Operation Daguet.
  • Maastricht Treaty

    (Political/Economical) The Maastricht Treaty was also known as the Treaty of the European Union, which was signed by the European Community in 1992 and went into force on November 1st, 1993.This treaty mainly went off of the laws and changes of the Treaty of Rome and introduced political and economic innovations including the three-pillar structure which covered economical problems, home affairs and foreign affairs, setting up a whole new set of responsibilities.
  • Air France Flight 8689

    Air France Flight 8689
    (Social) In 1994 the Air France Flight 8689 (an Air France flight) was stolen by the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria which was in a state of Civil War. The terrorists’ main idea was to crash the plane over Paris. Overall three passengers were killed, and as soon as the aircraft landed in Marseille the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group also known as GIGN had all four of the hijackers.

    (Political) First elected in 1995 Chirac then was reelected for President in 2002 and remained President till 2007. Chirac had promised to help France economically, by increasing economic growth, decreasing unemployment rate, lowering taxes, creating more jobs, create a better education system, but in the end most of his policies had failed.

    (Social) In 1995, France picked up on the nuclear testing, but soon approved of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and the Non-Proliferation Treaty which both stated that any nuclear testing would be banned and made the Earth a little bit safer. France is known as the third most powerful nuclear nation, the last nuclear test was on January 26th, 1996 but France is still known for their nuclear arsenals.
  • 1995 Paris Metro Bombing

    1995 Paris Metro Bombing
    (Social) The Armed Islamic Group, whose aim is to replace the Algerian Government with the Islamic State, began the bombing in France. Overall, over 100 people were injured and 8 were killed. The bombing included a gas bottle exploding underground, a bomb at the Arc de Triomphe, a car bomb at a Jewish school and many more underground incidents.
  • Civil Unrest

    Civil Unrest
    (Social) The unrest had started with the frustration of high unemployment throughout France and the brutality that was happening. The riots mainly involved burning of cars, buildings and even schools involving most of the not wealthy people. Soon a state of emergency was acknowledged and remained for three months, and everything had settled down.
  • Nicolas Sarkozy

    (Political) In 2007, Sarkozy was elected president of France and won over the runner of the Socialist Party. Sarkozy had promised to make huge changes such as reducing taxes, liberalize the country’s market and to make the United States and France have better and closer relationships. Sarkozy is the head of the UMP (Union for Popular Movement).
  • France Unveils Stimulus Package

    (Economic) The French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, revealed a package that is hoping to help the French Economy. In the package included 11 billion euros to help businesses around the country, 4 billion euros on transportation needs and also 11 billion euros of direct state investment. Thus hoping to help to economy by around 1.3% which will help a lot of the workers and for everything to come out positive.
  • Economic Crisis

    (Economic) In 2009 around 3 million workers gathered together to protest against Sarkozy and blaming him for not keeping the workers safe from the economic crisis. The numbers of people without jobs are above 2 million, and since everything is so expensive people are truly struggling throughout France. Workers are asking for higher wages, higher taxes for the people who make more money and a way to keep the employment protected.
