54th Massachusetts Regiment Founded
Many of the soldiers in the regiment were African American. Most of the regiment was made up of volunteers. -

There were 1,007 black soldiers and 37 white officers. All of the African Americans fought, even after knowing that if they were captured, they would be sold back into slavery. The reigment was created in Boston, but the volunteers were from all around the United States, the Carribean, and Canada. -
Battle at Fort Wagner
The battle was lost, but the 54th Regiment did a great deal of damage to the fort. Their role was simply to take the fort, however, although they failed to take it, they did not give up. A few weeks later, they attacked again and took the fort.
