    the first residential school was opened in 1831 in Brantford, Ontario however in 1880 made it mandatory. Residential schools were run by the churches, and were finance/sponsored the government. In total, there is an estimated 150,000 First Nation, Inuit, and Métis children attended/forced to go to residential schools.The purpose of the residential schools was to educate and convert Indigenous youth and to assimilate them into Canadian society.
