Stanley Hall and John Dewey, Education Reformers
Hall's work helped shift the focus of teaching from the subject to the student through his assertion that no education could be worthy, much less efficient, if it ignored student's actual nature, needs, and development. John Dewey's balance between subjects and students and emphasis on effective teaching challenged traditional subject - centered schooling views and practices. -

Legal Cases to End Segregation in Schools
Several cases were carried out to finally end schools being segregated. As early as 1894 the Roberts case in Massachusetts brought forth the "separate but equal" standing, in 1896 Plessy vs Ferguson initiated "separate but equal" as a national standard. The Cummings case showed "equal protection" and "separate but equal" were meaningless and finally Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 would now allow for schools to end segregation between White and African American students. -
Education for all Handicapped Children Act
Under this act it would allow for students with disabilities to receive a free and appropriate public education. Along with the act allowing for disabled children to have the opportunity for public education it also would provide each student with an individualized education program, special education and related services, due process procedures, and the least restrictive learning environment. -
A Nation at Risk
The report A Nation At Risk in 1983 had brought for a challenge to how public schools should do better with more of an emphasis on higher standers, testing and rigorous curriculum for all students. This report had much criticism, but still is responsible for sparking some key steps in education. It got policy makers to increase public schools accountability and educational rigor as proven through standardized tests. -

No Child Left Behind Act
The purpose of this act was to have the federal government to hold states, districts, and schools accountable especially when it was concerning low - income students, minority students, English language learners, and students with disabilities. This act pushed for all students to pass the state standard assessments and be preforming at grade level in language arts, mathematics, and science.
