5.3 History of Social Media (1900-2000)

  • 1940’s

    The first super computers were created in the 1940’s. Scientists and engineers created networks between computers. The networks led to the internet.

  • 1960’s

    The first kinds of the internet, like CompuServe, were invented in the 1960’s. CompuServe was very expensive, it was $6/hour and the really long distance. Sometimes it was $30/hour or more.

  • 1980’s

    Home computers were increasingly becoming more popular. Internet online chats and internet relay chats, (IRCs) were first invented in 1988 and was popular even into the 1990’s.

  • 1990’s

    The first social media site was Six Degrees, it was created in 1997. It allowed people to make a profile and make friends with other people online. The first blogging websites were popular in 1997, and is still popular today.
