Several counties along the Red River became popular among army deserters and others who opposed the war. The Red River is one of the largest and longest rivers in Texas and New Mexico. It seperates Texas and Oklahoma.

Elijah P. Petty died fighting in the Red River campaign, at Pleasant Hill, Louisianna. He was a strong man.

"Rip" Ford and Santos Benavides took over the area. These men were very powerful.

Seemed certain the Confederacy would lose the Civil War. As so later on they lost the Civil War.

The last land battle of the Civil War occured at Palmito ranch in South Texas near Brownsville. It is a large ranch.

Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith signed the offical surrender of the Trans-Mississippi area, including Texas.
