Smuggled
In Chapter 10, Amir and Baba were being smuggled out of Afghanistan. It shows the state that Afghanistan has become during this time in the story and also shows the sacrifices that Baba was willing to make in order to get to a new place where they would not have to deal with the violence. -
Suicide
Kamal's Father shoots himself because Kamal dies. Page 124 This is important because it shows how desperate people were in Afghanistan and whenever tradgedy happened, his only way out of the stress and disappointment was to end his own life. -
Moving
They move to America and get an apartment in Freemont, California. Page 125. This is important because they had to move away from the hostilities of Afghanistan and leave behind the good lifestyle that they had because of the hostility between the Hazaras and Pashtuns. -
A Job
Baba goes from being a prosperous business man to a gas station manager. Page 129-130. This is important because it shows the levels of success that Baba had to give up because of Afghanistan, becoming a gas station manager after he was a high profiled business man. It also shows that what a business man is in Afghanistan, is equivalent to the position of a gas station manager in the United States. -
Flea Market
Baba and Amir start selling random items that they found at the Flea Market 137-138. This was important because its shows the measures an Afghan had to take in order to make the transition from Afghanistan to America. -
The General's Daughter
Amir meets the General and his Daughter at the Flea Market 139-140. This was important because Amir ended up asking the General for his daughter's (Soraya) hand in marriage. -
Diagnosis
Baba is diagnosed with cancer. Pages 155-156. Baba being diagnosed with cancer is important because it foreshadows how Baba is going to die. -
Refusal Because He's Russian
Baba refused to be treated by his Russian doctor. Page 155 Baba refusing treatmeant from a Russian doctor is important because Baba remembered what the Russians did whenever they invaded Afghanistan and did not want anything to do with a Russian doctor, no matter how serious his problem was. -
Acceptance
The General accepts Amir's proposal for Soraya's hand in marriage. Page 163-165. The General accepting the proposal Amir had made was important because Soraya ended up marrying Amir and she was a big part of his life. -
What a sad day
Baba Dies. Page 174-176 This is important because Baba had not been a perfect Father figure in Amir's life, but Baba had always been there for Amir and supported him. This signifies Amir's actual transition into Adulthood because he has to now provide and take care of himself. -
Mr. and Mrs. Independant
Amir and Soraya move into their own apartment. Page 180. This shows that Amir and Soraya were being more independant as adults without the help of The General or Baba. -
Unexplained Phenomenon
Amir and Soraya try to have a baby, but due to unexplained circumstances, this is not possible. Page 185. This was important to the plot because Amir and Soraya not being able to have a child affects Amir's ability to carry on his family name and Amir's and Soraya's relationship. -
A Published Author
Amir becomes a published author. Page 188. Amir becoming a published author shows that he was able to be a successful author even though his life was marked with tradgedy and he did not let his past effect how he lives his adult life. -
Return to old ties
Amir says he must leave for Pakistan. Pages 191-192. Amir leaving for Pakistan brings up a bunch of demons that has lived in his past, but it offers him a way to be good again.
