Giuseppe Mazzini who is a nationalist organized a group called "Young Italy". Young Italy is a group of Italian patriots who dedicates in making the country of Italy. The group wanted a free & independent country. -
King Of Italy
The ruler of Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel, was titiles as "King Of Italy". Meanwhile, Camillo di Cavour became a prime minister of Sardinia, three years later. He said that he would drive out or take in Austrians & unite Italy. -
Agreement
Camillo di Cavour who is a repiublican & and Italian patriot, asked for help from Napoleon III of France to defeat the Austrians, but in return of 2 small Italian territories. Camillo had to give up Nice & Savoy. The French helped aid Sardinia when the Austrians came & attacked it. Austrians had to gave up Lombardy. -
It's War Time
Austria declared war on Sardinia. It started as both Sardinia & French joined forces & drove the Austrians out of Lombardy & they kept marching to Venetia. Many italian patriots from the territories of Modena, Parma, & Tuscany overthrew their rulers & wished to join with Sardinia. At the end of all these, Sardinia received Lombardy & Austria left Venetia. -
"Expedition Of The Thousand"
A man named Giuseppe Garibaldi who devotes himself to Italian freedom, recruited more than 1000 soldiers. He called these men "Expedition Of The Thousand" which they invaded & captured Sicily.He became a hero in both within & outside of Italy because of all the things he did. Garibaldi went too far when he decided to capture Rome & Venetia, so Cavour sent an army to stop him. Meanwhile, Sardinia annexed most of the territories of the Papal States. -
Uh oh!!!...
During 1860, many problems occured including that a few Italians experienced with self-government, labor problems arosed & many Italians standard of living was low. Tensions grew between the industrialized north & agicultural north. Because of cultural traditions, many regions of the country remained divided. -
At last!!!
After Italy gained Venetia in a war with Austria, Rome's citizens voted for union with Italy. The next year, Rome became the capital of Italy.
