Emancipation Proclamation
This said that all states in rebellious places, all slaves were free. Unless they returned to union by January 1, 1863. Applied to 10 states. -
Fredricksburg
Lasted 5 days. Lee suffered 5,000 casualities. inflicted 13,000. In Virginia -
Chancellorsville
Lasted 7 days. Just outside town of Chancellorsville, Virginia. known as lee's perfect battle because of his successful and risky manuevers. -
Stonewall Jackson killed
Shot by own pickets. Sleeping on horse and soldier yelled hed shoot if no response and he didn't and he was shot. -
Vicksburg
Ended on july 4th. Union lost 10,000 men and South lost 9,000. North won. -
West Virginia becomes State
Bordered by Kentucky and Virginia. Middle of USA -
gettysburg
Lasted until July 3. Turning point in war. Happened in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. -
Battle of Little Roundtop
South of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. 2 small rocky hills. Union held high ground and confederacy charged up the hill. Joshua Chamberlain was a leader from maine and maine held the furthest left and did an amazing job holding them. -
Gettysburg Adress
Most famous speech ever in United States history. Given by Lincoln 5 months after battle. -
Grant Takes Control
Grant took control as lutenent. Won civil war. Became president later. -
Lincoln Reelected
Lincoln reelected overwhelmingly. Mostly because of emancpation proclamation. Won war. -
Shermans march to the sea
Lasted until december 21. Cut path 60 miles wide. Killed/burned/destroyed anythng in his way. Started saying "war is hell" and "total war". -
Surrender Appomattox courthouse
5 pm. Lee met Grant in Wilmer Mcleans home about surrender.. -
Lincoln election/assassination
Shot on April 14, 1865. Elected president in 1860. Shot by John Wilkes Booth. Ran against seward and chase. -
