Lincoln Elected President
Lincoln was our 16th president and our first republican president. He led the country through hard times for five years until his assassination. Some of his most recognizable achievements were the abolishment of slavery and the Emancipation Proclomation. -
Fort Sumter
This bombardment and surrender in South Carolina of Fort Sumter was the start of the civil war. The confederates attacked at night and the Union surrendered. -
Battle at Bull Run/ Manassas
This was the first major "land" battle of the civil war. The union planned a surprise attack on the confederates and the confederates had a good counterattack. This is where the name "Stonewall Jackson" become known. They realized the war would be much longer than they had anticipated. -
Battle of monitor and merrimack
This battle lasted for two days. It was the naval battle of the civil war. Fought in Virginia and the point was to cut off the blockade that was formed around Virginias major cities. -
Battle of Shiloh
LAsted for two days. Fought in Southwestern Tennessee. THe union won this battle with a fight. The confederates were winning then the Union prevailed. ALso called the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. -
Battle of Antietam
Fought by Shaprsburg, MAryland and Antietam Creek. It was the first real battle on Northern soil. ABout 23,000 casualties leading to the bloodiest day in battle. THe attacks were against Robert E. Lee's Armies. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
It was fought in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was fought between RObert E. Lee's Confederate Army and The Union of Potomac and the North suffered many casualties. The battle lasted for 5 days. -
Emancipation Proclomation
Lincoln proposed this saying that slae=ves in rebellion states would be freed. He soon realized that it would not have much contitutional authority, it only put a name on what was already going to happen. It was his way of telling people that the was wasn't being fought for nothing. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
It ended on May 6, 1863. It was against RObert E. Lee and Joseph Hooker. Hooker ahd the larger Army but Lee was smart about the way he split up his forces. It was fought in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. KNown as "Lee's Perfect Battle." -
Stonewall Jackson killed
He was considered one of the best generals in the civl war. He ded on a sunday of complcations from pnemonia. -
Battle at Vicksburg
went from May 18-July 4. On July 4th Vicksburg surrendered. This was good for the Union because they got full access of Mississippi River. -
West Virginia becomes a state
They broke away from Virginia being admitted into the Union durng the Civil war. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Seemed to be the turning point of the CIvil War and 160,000 AMerican Soldiers clashed during the Battle. It lasted for three days. About 7,500 people were lying dead in the fields. -
Battle of Little Roundtop
This was the second day of the battle of Gettysburg. 2oth Maine was one of the best known regiments in this battle led by Jonathon Chamberlin. -
Gettysburg Address
A speech that Abraham Lincoln presented and is now known as one of the best speaches in AMerican History. He gave the speech about four and a half months after the Union defeated the confederacy. -
Grant takes command
Lincoln put Grant in charge of all unon troups anticipating the end of the civil war wthin a year. He also was sent to capture Rchmond, the confederates capitol. -
Lincoln reelected
Lincoln was reelected with 55% popular vote. -
Sherman's March to Sea
Started wth William Tecumsah Sherman leadng his union troups through Georgia and ended when they captured port of Savannah Georgia on December 21st. They burned and pillaged everything in ther path. -
Surrender at Appomatox courthouse
Happened in Wlber Mcleans yard similar to the beginnng of the war. Lee and Grant came to a conclusion that ended the war in the town of Appomatox Courthouse. -
Lincoln Assassination
Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre by John Wilkes Booth. He was shot in the head while watching a play with his wife. He enjoyed going to the theatre it helped in escape every day life. -
13th Amendment
This amendment abolished slavery. Lincoln agreed with with it because people say the Emancipation Proclomation ws a temporary thing that would only last until after the civil war.
