1944 Education Act
The 1944 Education act was passed through parliament by R.A.Butler enabling all secondary education to be received free by all children. The leaving age of children was also raised to 15.
LEA's responsible with the spirital, moral, mental and physical development of the child -
The Crowther Report 1959
Recommeded raising the leaving age to 16 years old, introduction of comprehensive schooling for all, new exams catering for different abilities and a wider choice in post 16 courses. -
1962 Certificate of Secondary Education
CSE introduced for the next 40% -
1967 Plowden Report
The plowden report focused on the individual child and develops at their own rate in three areas:
1. Physical 2. Intellectual 3. Emotional
The pedagogy used was now child centered.
Recommendations that are still taking effect today are; smaller class sizes, structured lessons with individual, group and class work, more teacher assistants, flexibility in the times of the school day, teachers able to adapt to the technical advances, child centered and teachers having more say. -
1972 - leaving age raised to 16
The school leaving age was raised to 1972 -
1973 - Manpower Services Commission set up
The commission was created to address the growing number of youth unemployment and one of the outcomes was the YTS (Youth Training Scheme). -
1975 - Sex Discriminations Act
Sex Discrimination Act
As with the Race Relations act this was revolutionary and changed society bringing equal opportunities to women. Again Illegal to discriminate. -
James Callaghan Speech 1976
The aspect this speech took was that education should be used to equip children for a place in society and in the workplace. It left teachers unsure of their role and the direction in which education would take. -

This act was revolutionary within society as no longer could you discriminate against anyone on the grounds of race. It was illegal to do so. -

1981 - Education (Special Education) Act
Special Educational Needs were now being identified within the educational system and statemented if required. Children with special needs were now to be educated in 'mainstream schools', parents were able to appeal against statementing of their child and the LEA's were now responsible for identifying and assessing special needs and providing the statementing as required. -
Primary School started in April 1985
St Johns Primary School
The start of my educationl life was within St John's Primary school in Bishopswood. This was a small rural school with struggling numbers - enjoyed my time at primary school as I was able to pursue the directions that I had interest in. At this time it was football and being a tomboy. -
1986 - National Council - for Vocational Qualification
accredit competence within the workplace - creation of the NVQ. Vocational Training programmes are contraversial within their role in society as it may be understood as the only reason they appear popular is when unemployement is high and that it teaches people that there is only one place in society for them, no aspirations. -
1988 - GCSE's in all subjects
New methods of assessing learning ;

2. Application of knowledge
NOT just memorizing the facts. -

Saw the introduction of the 3 core subjects; English, Maths and Science as well as foundation subjects. RE was the only basic subject without assessment.
The act enabled both primary and secondary to opt out of the local authority control and be funded by central government. -
Changed to Brewood Middle School 1989
Brewood Middle School
Went from Primary school to Middle school at the age of 9. This was a significant change for me as I enjoyed being one of the guys and was never a girly girl. I was told football was for boys and was unable to play the sport again. Whole school assemblies for religious reasons and RE specific lessons. National Curriculum came in and structured the layout of my timetable. -
1992 - Establishment of OFSTED

To monitor and report on quality of schools, on individual schools and wider issues such as equality, teaching and learning in specific subjects -
Wolgarston High School - 1993
Wolgarston High School
Changed from Middle school to Wolgarston High School in 1993. A new head mistress took over at the same time - Mrs Cook. -

I studied a BTEC National Diploma in Early Childhood Studies. After career advice that formulatted as 'What are you good at' my answer 'working with kids' then do this course was the answer. -

Through my work i gained an NVQ level 2 in Customer Service and an NVQ level 2 in Business and Administration. -

My son Christopher was born at 12pm
My priorities on life have now changed forever. Now looking to the future and the changes I will make. I am now becoming aware on the schooling that I want my child to undertake and the future I would like him to have. -
My Son Jack was born at 2pm
After having Jack I now want to look to the future and make a better life for my family. Following my career in teaching is for me and my children. -
