    All important events which helped Canada become an autonomous Community.
  • The Paris Peace Conference

    The Paris Peace Conference
    After the end of World War 1, this meeting was called to talk about the many peace treaties and resolutions following the war. Canada was also invited to the conference, after having played an important part in the war.
  • The Chanak Crisis

    The Chanak Crisis
    An attack that the Turkish would of commited on French and British forces stationed in Chanak now known as Canakkale. Prime minister King gave the feeling of detachment for Canadian external policy from the British, after hearing of the incident from a news reporter and not from Britain itself.
  • The Halibut Treaty

    The Halibut Treaty
    This was the first treaty signed by Canadian government independently which was an agreement for fishing rights by the US-CA. Britain wanted to sign the treaty as well, Prime Minister King disputed this in Washington and Britain backed off. Also a significant moment that lead to Canada's independence.
  • The King-Byng Crisis

    The King-Byng Crisis
    When the Governor-General Viscount Byng denied Prime Minister King's request to dissolve Parliament while a motion of censure was under debate as this was unheard of before. A situation where Byng did not look to Britain for guidance and instead let Canada decide on their own. This led to the change of the Governor-General's role in Canadian government and all Dominion's of the Brtish Empire.
  • The Balfour Report

    The Balfour Report
    A document written during the Imperial Conference which was attended by all the leaders of the Dominions of the British Empire declaring Britain and all of it's colonies were "autonomous Communities within the British Empire, equal in status..." This was another event towards Canada's autonomy and a significant role for independence.
  • The Statute Of Westminister

    The Statute Of Westminister
    Official British law that gave all Dominions of the British Empire legislative equality and independence, except to those who wanted to remain subordinate. This was the final step in the road to Canada's autonomy.
