  • Winter Olympics

    Winter Olympics
    The 2018 Winter Olympics were held in PyeongChang, South Korea. This was the first time that South Korea had hosted the Winter Olympics. The Russian Olympic committee was suspended because of a state sponsored doping program, select athletes from Russia were allowed to compete naturally in the events. North Korea agreed to participate despite tensions between the two countries.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin was re-elected for his second consecutive, and fourth overall term. His most outspoken opponent, Alexei Navalny was disqualified from the race.

    Scientists published a new report stating that the use of CFC's, chemicals which can cause holes in the ozone layer, had increased, despite the worldwide ban. Scientist predicted that the emissions were caused by somewhere in East Asia, and this was later confirmed when it was discovered that CFC's were being used in Chinese insulation.

    Aviation King Air C90 plane crash in India where the plane was being tested by 2 pilots and 2 technicians. Unfortunately the plane crashed and the 12 seater killed all 4 inside and 1 person on the ground. The crash remains a mystery today.

    All 12 boys of Thai boys soccer team rescued from cave (Jonathan)
    On June 23, 2018, after a routine trip into the Tham Luang Cave in the Chiang Rai province of Thailand, a Thai boys soccer team and their coach were trapped after heavy rainfall flooded the cave. It took ten days to even get in contact with the team and attracted attention from all over the world. An international rescue team mission began on July 7, to rescue the boys and on July 10, all boys and the coach were successfully rescued and were then rushed to a hospital.

    From August 18th- September 2nd 10,000 Athletes from 45 Asian Countries competed in the Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games. The Logo for the 18th Asian Games is a colorful circle taken from the shape of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, and named the Energy of Asia, depicting the strengthening spirit of the Games, participated by multicultural nations shining for all the world to see.

    On September 28, an earthquake struck the Minahasa Peninsula off the coast of the Sulawesi province of Indonesia. It was a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that caused a tsunami that struck the capital of Sulawesi, Palu. The combined effects of the earthquake and tsunami have caused 2256 deaths and around 500 missing people. Tens of thousands have also gone homeless as the tsunami destroyed homes and caused mudslides. This is the largest earthquake this year and the biggest in Indonesia since 2006.

    Lion Air flight 610 was a domestic Indonesian flight. The plane crashed killing all 189 passengers and crew members. This was the deadliest plane crash for Lion Air and the second most deadliest for Indonesia. This was an unusual crash because the plane was only two months old. It was suspected that there was an issue with the airspeed indicator and automation built into the plane. The prior flight had similar issues, however that flight crew disabled the automation.

    Thailand's military government has announced the country will hold a general election in November 2018.The military has repeatedly delayed a vote since seizing power in 2014. Military-appointed Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha told reporters the exact date will be set next June.The Thai military has seized power 12 times since 1932, but earlier this year pledged not to stage another coup after the next election.

    Huawei CFO arrested (Jonathan)
    The Chief Financial Officer, of the Chinese telecommunications company was detained in Vancouver on December 1, 2018, on the request of US authorities. Huawei became the second largest smartphone seller in the world, behind Samsung, surpassing Apple in the third quarter of 2018. Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the founder of Huawei, was arrested under suspicion for violating US trade sanctions on Iran and several instances of fraud involving millions of dollars.
