We will start off the year going over classroom procedures, rules, and expectations.
-
Welcome to Mrs. Hanshaw's 7th grade science class! With this timline, you will have an idea of what we are learning this year and the pace we will be moving. Be ready to work so that you are not left behind!
-
Our first unit will be all about lab safety! We have many neat experiments and projects planned for the year BUT we have to learn how to manage ourselves at the lab stations and become familiar with lab equipment first.
-
Review of the experimentation process and common mathematics found in science.
-
We will study four types of disease causing organisms and the specific diseases that they are responsible for.
-
We will study the muscular, integumentary, and skeltal systems of the human body
-
In this month long unit, we will look at several factors that make up our ecosystem. We will learn about animal and plant adaptations to changing environments, reproductive adaptations through natural selection, what influences an organism's behavior, the nature of flowering vs non-flowering plants, limiting factors, and the negative affects of the introduction of chemicals into the ecosystem.
-
We will learn about the nature of sound waves, observe the absorption and refraction of light, and investigate the absorption of light by an object
-
We will learn how to describe rock formations, classify rocks, and determine the relevant age of rocks and fossils using the law of superposition and radioactive dating
-
We will discover the causes of tides, surfs, and currents, examine the affect of the sun's energy on ocean patterns, and look at cyclical patterns in nature.
-
We will compare differences between homogenous mixtures, heterogenous mixtures, elements, and compounds, examine chemical reactions that take place between acids and bases, the process of neutralizations, use indicators and identify an acid or a base, and write chemical equations using word formulas.
-
We will investigate series and parallel circuits, AC/DC Currents, different forms of energy, and perform experiments with simple machines
-
In this unit, we will learn to trace the life cycle of a star
-
For the next month, you will decide on a science project to investigate. Topics must be approved by Mrs. Hanshaw. Class time will be dedicated to the research and experimentation process. At the beginning of May, we will hold a 7th grade Science Fair. Be prepared to do a lot of work at home as well!

During the last 3 weeks of school, we will begin preparing for what we are learning in 8th grade!
