Salem Witch Trials
Began when a group of girls claimed to be possessed by evil spirits (the Devil) and accused women of the practice of witchcraft. Impacted the U.S. court system including the assumption that one is innocent until proven guilty. -
Stamp Act
Required that printed materials must have a tax stamp provided in which commissioned distributors would trade the stamp in for tax. Resulted in many protests within the colonies. -
Industrial Revolution
Goods that used to be crafted by hand began to be produced by machines in factories. Small towns became urbanized and turned into major cities. Increased production of goods, wealth, and the quality of living. -
Women's Suffrage Movement
A fight to give women the right to vote in the U.S. It became the single largest extension of democratic voting rights in U.S. history. Women's salaries increased, even though they still weren't the amount that men received. Women's economic roles escalated. -
Slavery Abolished
The 13th Amendment is adopted into the U.S. Constitution confirming that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude… shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Freed thousands of enslaved African Americans. -
Prohibition
The production, importation, transportation and selling of alcoholic beverages was banned in the U.S. Almost destroyed America's brewing industry. -
The Great Depression
Began due to the stock market crash. It was the worst economic setback in industrialized world history. The most damaging impact was human suffering. -
The Dust Bowl
A period of drastic dust storms which damaged the agriculture and ecology of America and Canada. Caused by erosion, drought, and abnormally high temperatures. Killed livestock and people and prices for crops decreased beneath subsistence levels. -
Civil Rights Movement
A struggle for African Americans to end racial discrimination and acquire equal rights. African Americans desired freedom and justice and fought for their rights. Banned segregation and discrimination. -
September 11, 2001
A series of four terrorist attacks against the U.S. 19 terrorists from al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes; two crashing into the Twin Towers, one crashing into the Pentagon. When passengers on the fourth plane heard about the attacks, they made it so the plane would crash into an empty field in Pennsylvania instead of the White House (which is where it was headed). This resulted in the death of over 3000 people.
