The attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,100 passengers and crew members. The sinking of the Lusitania led the United States to involvement in the war.

    The German invasion of Belgium
    The German invasion of Belgium began on August 4, 1914, which was a military campaign. The government of Belgium announced on July 24th that if war came it would uphold its neutrality. The Belgian government deployed its armed forces on July 31 and a state of heightened alert was proclaimed in Germany.

    The Gallipoli Campaign was a military campaign. The Entente powers pursued to weaken the Ottoman Empire by taking control of the Ottoman straits. The land-based element of a strategy intended to allow Allied ships to pass through the Dardanelles, and capture Constantinople. The goal was for the British and French forces to take control of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. They wanted to secure a sea route to Russia and win the Ottoman Empire.

    Earl was writing to the person he sent letters to so he could relieve them from any worry that they may have while he was overseas. but so far everything had been going well for the crew and him. He was also riding in the letters that if he didn't return at least he sacrificed his life but the chances were low of him not returning.

    Earl M. Bill has spent most of his time censoring mail for the men in the battery. when they censor the mail sometimes they run into love letters. Earl M. Bill says that reading their mail helps him see the other side of the men he's never seen. they censor the mail so there isn't any information that enemies could use against them. he can also censor his mail but is very careful in what he writes in his letters.

    They are forbidden to mention the name of the ship and also the time that they leave the port of embarkation. Earl M. Bill got Spanish influenza the second day he was on the ship and wasn't able to be on duty for at least 3 days after he recovered. he was on the sick Bay until Monday to recover. Earl M. bill says that the battery has been having a hard time with influenza.

    With Thanksgiving coming up Earl M. Bill wants to buy a turkey for the men. he wants the men to have something different than just beef like they always eat. the French are so high on their prices that it might be too expensive. Earl M. Bill and the men were expecting to move into their new Barracks sometime before Thanksgiving. The Barracks have a layer of at least 20 ft of thick flooring.

    They got to the city of Brest early morning on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the worst camp they had been to. While a the camp 2 false alarms went off. the camp was built in a mud hole there was water everywhere even in the Sharks where the men and officers all slept.

    The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty. It was signed on 28 June 1919, it helped end the state war between Germany and most of the Allied powers. It was signed five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz. The treaty was signed in the Palace of Versailles. The United States never affirmed the treaty, and Germany and the United States signed a separate peace treaty.

    The Battle of the Somme
    The Battle of the Somme took place between July 1st and November 18. The battle of the First World War. It was fought by the army of the French Third Republic and the British Empire against the German Empire. It was intended to expedite a victory for the Allies. Over 3 million men fought during the battle, and 1 million men from the 3 million men were either wounded or killed during the battle.
