Stethoscope
Rene Laennec, a French doctor, invented the stethoscope and used it in the diagnosis of chest infections. We still use them now to check for infections and to listen to heart beats, but our stethoscopes are more advanced.

Blood Transfusion
The blood transfusion was by Philip Physick and was used to treat hemorrhage. Aspirin
French chemist, Charles Henri Leroux, first isolated the 'miracle' drug Salicylic Acid (proto-aspirin) in 1829. An Italian, Raffaele Piria later improved on this process in 1838. They used it for pains and heart problems and things like that and we still use it for the same thing today.

Inhaled Ether Anesthesia
Crawford Long, an American pharmacist and surgeon, was the first doctor to give a patient inhaled ether anesthesia for a surgical procedure. Ether is still used as an anesthetic in some developing countries because of its low cost and high therapeutic index with minimal cardiac and respiratory depression.

Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis
Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis (1818-1865) was a Hungarian physician who is considered the early pioneer of antiseptic procedures, specifically hand washing. He discovered that the incidence of the often fatal puerperal fever (“childbed fever”) could be drastically cut by the use of hand disinfection.

Ophthalmoscope
The ophthalmoscope was firstly devised by Charles Babbage in 1847 and later rediscovered by Hermann von Helmholtz independently in 1851. The basic principle is to direct light into the eye using a small mirror or prism. This light is reflected off the retina and back into the device through a small hole.

Harvey Williams Cushing
Many of the discoveries that Harvey Williams Cushing (1869-1939) made in the 19th century are still used today and as a result, he is widely considered the “Father of modern medicine.” He is most famous for discovering the use of local anesthesia during surgery, and creating the specialty of neurosurgery with his studies of the central nervous system.

Rabies
Pasteur managed to prevent rabies in Joseph Meister, a 9-year-old boy, using a postexposure vaccination. We still use it today as a rabies vaccine and Postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) consists of a dose of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and rabies vaccine given on the day of the rabies exposure, and then a dose of vaccine given again on days 3, 7, and 14.

Malaria
Ronald Ross was a British Medical Doctor who served with the Indian Medical Service in the later 1890s. He managed to demonstrate that the malaria parasite was transmitted by mosquitoes.
