  • The War on Terror

    After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the War on Terror was launched in Afghanistan and the Iraq War was launched in 2003. The cost of these wars is ongoing. To date, the Congressional Research Service has approved about $944 billion for the operations overseas.-Ian
  • Hurricane Katrina & Rita

    Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast as a low Category 4, but quickly became the biggest natural disaster in US history. Hurricane Rita quickly followed Katrina only to make matters worse. Between the two, more than $200 billion in damage was done. 400,000 jobs were lost and 275,000 homes were destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and over 1,000 were killed and more are missing. The effect on oil and gasoline prices was long-lasting. -Ian
  • The Global Recession & Collapse of Wall Street

    The great investment banks that had stood on Wall Street began to collapse due to the sub-prime mortgage crisis and serious corporate fraud. During the last months of the Bush Administration, the federal government stepped in to bail out some of these institutions in order to keep the U.S. financial system afloat. -Alex
  • BP Oil Spill

    This was the result of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploding in the Gulf of Mexico. An estimated 3.19 million barrels of oil had seeped into the ocean. This had a major effect on the fish and plant life that lived in that area. -Alex

    This was categorized as one of the worst tornadoes in the U.S. It caused over 2 billion dollars in damage. This killed almost 200 people and injured 1,150. -Jacob
  • Marijuana is legal in Colorado

    In Colorado there are policies set for medical use and recreational use. It was the first state to legalize marijuana. This location even attracts tourists due to the legal marijuana. -Jacob
  • Flint Water Crisis

    The water in Flint, Michigan has been undrinkable for many months now. The water and pipes were contaminated with lead. Without switching the pipes out the water will never be completely clean. -Alex
