US Invasion of Panama
The US invaded Panama in attempt to overthrow military dictator Manuel Noriega, who had been indicted in the United States on drug trafficking charges and was accused of suppressing democracy in Panama and endangering U.S. nationals. 23 US soldiers died. -
Death of Jim Henson
Jim Henson was a puppeteer, artist, cartoonist, inventor, screenwriter, actor, film director and producer. He died by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which was a bacterial infection. At his funeral, six of the core muppet performers sang in their characer voices one of Jim's favorite songs. -
Passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act
Enacted by the US Congress that prohibited discrimination based on disability. It made it not allowed for people with disabilites to be discriminated with job aplication, hireing, etc. -
Rodney King Beating/ L.A. Riots
Rodney King was a African-American construction worker. He was beatren by five L.A. Police officers. The story made headlines around the world. Four of the officers were charged with assault with a deadly wepon and use of exessive force. -
Hurricane Andrew
Hurricane Andrew was the most costliest hurricane at its time. Andrew stuck Dade county on August 24th as a Category 5 hurricane. The storm devastated Dade County where it caused an estimated $25 billion in damage. In total, Andrew directly caused 26 deaths in the U.S. and indirectly caused 39 more. The number of homes destroyed was approximately 49,000, with an additional estimated 108,000 damaged. -
US Soldiers in Somalia/ Blackhawk Down
US Rangers entered Solmalia as part of Operation Gothic Serpent and the goal was to capture warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Delta Force helecopters were sent in to sieze Aidid's lieutenants in a meeting. Solmalia fighters shot down two of the Blackhawk helecopters. In an attept to rescue the downed pilots, 18 Us soldiers were killed and 30 wounded. It was estimated that 1,500-3,000 Solmalians were killed. -
(NAFTA) Passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement
Agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The goal was to eliminate envestment and trading berriers between the three countries. After it was signed on January 1994, it took away more than one-half of Mexico's exports to the U.S. and more than one-third of U.S. exports to Mexico. NAFTA was to reduce trading cost, increse buisness investment, and help North America be more competative in the global market place. -
Olympic Parck Bombing
During the 1996 Summer Olympics, a terrorist attack occured at the Centnnial Olympic Park. 1 person died and 111 people were injured. The bomber was named Eric Rudolph and it was his 1st of the four bombing he would commit. -
Murder of Jon Bernet Ramsey
Jon Bernet Ramsey was a child beauty pagent queen who was murdered in her home in Boulder, Colorado. Her body was found in the basement after she was reported missing 8 hours later. Police found that she was struck in the head and was strangled. The case is still unsolved. -
Heaven's Gate Cult Suicide
Heaven's Gate was a UFO religios group based in San Diego, California. Police found 39 members of the group that had committed suicide because they believed it was how to reach an alien space craft following the Comet Hale–Bopp. From the autopsies, it was found that they killed themselves by taking cyanide and arsenic. -
Murder of James Byrd
James Byrd, accepted a ride from three men named Shawn Berry , Lawrence Russell Brewer, and John King. They took James out of town and serverly beat him, urinated on him, and tied him up to the back of a truck and dragged him about 1.5 miles. He was killed by his head and right arm was severted after his body hit a Culvert. The three men dumped his remains in front of an African-American Church. -
Murder of Matthew Sheppard
Aaron Mickenley, and Russell were to give Matthew a ride home from the Fireside Lounge in Larame, Wyoming. Instead they drove him to a rual place and robbed Matthew and pistol whiped him and they tied him to a fense and left him to die. He was discovered 18 hours later by Aaron Kreifels who was a cyclist that fitst thought he was a scarecrow. A police officer arrived on the sene and Matthew was then taken to the hospital where he died. -
NATO bombing in Yugoslavia
NATO's military operation against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia dutring the Kosovo War. It was not Authorized by the UN and was the first time NATO military force without the aproval of the UN Security Council. The strikes lasted from March 24th 1999 to June 10, 1999. 528 Yugoslav civilians were killed in the ninety separate incidents in Operation Allied Force. -
Columbine Massacre
Two high school seniors named Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris walked into Colombine High School in Littleton, CO during the middle of the day. Their plan was to kill hundreds of their peers. They were armed with guns, knives and small bombs. By the end of the day, 12 students, one teacher, and both murderes were dead plus 21 wounded. -
Y2K Scare
People thought that after 1999, all the computers in the world would not reconize that it was the year 2000 and it would roolback to the year 1990. People though that they would loose everything and cause chaos with banking, hospitals, airlines, security, broadfcasting and everything else. In the end, when it hit 2000, nothing actually happened.
