1990-2000 technology timeline

  • System Management Mode is released.

    The System Management Mode or SMM for short, is an operating mode that was released by Intel. SMM is used to perform low-level system management operations while an operating system is in use. This has helped to boost a computer's power management when it is idle. When a computer is idle, otherwise known as "sleeping," it still drains power levels, just to stay on. SMM allows for the computer to conserve its energy while idle.
  • Python was released

    Guido van Rossum created the widely used, high-level programming language, Python. Python is used to help put application together quickly, and has led to the creation of many other technological advancements.
  • PocketWeb is created!

    The world's first microbrowser, PocketWeb, is created. It was designed to be a web browser that can be used on mobile devices. It paved the way for many advancements in mobile device technology. It led to the creation of several other microbrowsers such as, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Without PocketWeb, the mobile devices that we use today, would be very different.
  • Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 1.0

    Microsoft releases the widely used internet browser, Internet Explorer 1.0. Internet Explorer had a huge impact, as it was the number 1 most used browser in the world, at one point in time. Tied directly into Windows operating system, it succeeded in overtaking Netscape, which was the most used browser in the 1990s.
  • MPEG-4 is introduced!

    MPEG-4 or MP4, is a video and audio compression standard. It was accepted as the standard, by the Motion Picture Experts Group. It is a format for encoding audio and video information, while compressing the file size. It is also used to help optimize media fidelity. MPEG-4 is used in the podcasts and audiobooks that we listen to. It is also found in the iPhone ringtones, and is a common video format.
