Winston starts a diary
This event show Winston's sense of resistance that he has and what makes him different from most of the people in Oceania. It shows his resistance as writing something that is subjective and personal is a crime. The fact that he acknowledges that this is a crime also shows the extreme control the Party has in Oceania -
Two Minutes Hate
Workers have to gather while Goldstein's image is flashed on the screen and people yell and scream at the images. This is important since it shows how Big Brother and the Party deal with "enemies" . -
Winston's has short lapses of his mother
Winston only has a passing image of his mother. Showing how Big Brother controls all and emotional bonds are frowned upon. -
Winston and the Dark-Haired Girl
This event is very important as it effects the rest of the novel. The relationship goes against Party laws as the relationship was not for the purpose of producing children. At first when we are introduced to Julia she is just referenced as the "dark-haired girl" that Winston believe is either a spy or part of the thought police, but after she slips him the "I love you" it changes his perception. -
Winston and Julia meet in a field
This event is important because its showing a place that the party has no real influence over as they are able to be hand in hand. For these short meetings that they continue to have are moments where they exist without Big Brother. -
Winston revealing that he does not like rats
This is an important foreshadowing moment. When Winston and Julia are in bed he tells Julia that he has a fear of rats. The rats will end up being used later on to make Winston betray Julia. -
Winston meets with O'Brien
Showing more of the rebellious side of Winston as he meets with O'Brien pledging to do whatever it takes to help with the destruction of the party. He learns of The Brotherhood and O'Brien tells him he will receive a book in a short time by Emmanuel Goldstein. -
Winston and Julia are caught by the thought police
Charrington (the owner of the shop) turns out to be a member of the thought police. With the thought police learning of their love affair they are imprisoned. They know they probably will never see or speak to one another ever again. -
"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past."
Winston is imprisoned and is tortured by O'Brien. The torture is to eliminate any last bit of humanity a person has. To acknowledge the power of Big Brother and the Party. Whatever the Party says is accurate and correct. -
Winston betrays Julia
Winston is sent to Room 101 where O'Brien is. O'Brien uses rats to get Winston to betray Julia. Room 101 is where the your worsts fear is used against you to betray anyone you love and then to love Big Brother instead.
