1980's Technology

  • VHS Players

    Although VHS players first came out in the late 70's, it became widely popular during the 80's. Users were able to record home videos and record their favorite TV shows on blank tapes. In 1985, Blockbuster opened and brought joy to VHS player users.
  • Sony Walkman

    The Sony Walkman is known as the original, portable cassette player.
    This was also created in Japan, this allowed users to be able to listen to the radio and cassette tapes through portable headphones. Although it debuted in the late 70's, it became really popular in the 80's.
  • Apple Macintosh 128k

    The Apple Macintosh received the name due to it running off of 128k of RAM. It provided an area for single-sided floppy disks, and had a handle for portability.
  • Motorola MicroTAC

    The MicroTAC was an advancement from the huge brick sized cell phones. Motorola created a "flip" phone where the mouth piece was located in the flap. When it was released, it retailed for $3,000.
  • 1989 - The Nintendo GameBoy

    The Gameboy was designed by Japanese creators.
    The system ran on four AA batteries, it was a very sturdy console. The Gameboy was an advancement in handheld consoles, later on it developed into Gameboy Advanced, and Gameboy Color.
