Ronald Reagan is elected the 40th President by a land slide. His aggressive approach to the Soviet Union by increasing defense planning, and cutting of taxes made him very popular. Some even believe credit him with the economic boom in 1980's -
Black Monday
On this day the US market plunged 22% in a single day. Worst then the crash in 1929, the market plunge after 9/11, and even the 2008 financial crisis. Because computerized trading was so new, issues with accelerated trade orders speed up market drops which led to the creation of circuit breakers. These were intended to halt trading when stocks fall to fast so that another event such as this does not happen again. -
America Goes to War in Middle East
Known as Operation Desert Shield, America sends US troops to Saudi Arabia to protect oil assets after Iraq invades Kuwait. Once Saudi Arabia was secured US implemented Operation Desert Storm to push Iraq back across the border. -
The Cold War Ends
President George H.W. Bush and his Russian counterpart, Boris Yeltsin, meet at Camp David to formally declare the end of the Cold War. -
EU Becomes reality
The European Union forms a treaty known as Maastricht Treaty. Creates a common currency called the Euro and removes border controls among member states. -
Oklahoma City Car Bombing
The deadliest domestic terrorist attack in US history. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols bomb the Alfred P. Murray Federal Building in Oklahoma City with a truck bomb. Killing 168 people including 19 children. -
NATO'S First Independent Strike
NATO initiated their first ever military campaign against the Republic of Yugoslavia. These were airstrikes aimed at stopping an onslaught against ethnic Albanians by the government of Slobodan. -
September 11th
The worst attack on U.S. soil since the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor. 19 Islamist extremist hijacked 4 passenger aircraft crashing two of them into the World Trade Center Towers and one into the Pentagon killing nearly 3,000 people. The 4th aircraft crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to regain control.
