Built on August 13, 1961, the Berlin wall stood for 28 years as a symbol of the division between Communism and Capitalism. After the Communist party re-allowed free access between East and West Berlin, hundreds of thousands of people from both sides chipped pieces away for souvenirs. Within a year both sides of Berlin were finally reunited.
